The Workshop
On December 7, 2019, I hosted a young artist’s workshop at the Wicker Park studio of Delicious Design League, a Chicago based design agency. Under the creative direction of Jason Teegarden-Downs, one of DDL’s founders, 24 kids ranging from 6–12 years old, spent the morning creating amazing art.

Embrace the Happy Accidents
Having stocked the kid’s tables with inks, paints, charcoal pencils, brushes, markers, bingo markers, scissors and paper, Jason reviewed the materials with the group and briefly discussed design elements and principles. He stressed that their work be “finished, not perfect” and assured them that they need not fret mistakes because “we welcome mistakes as artists as that’s how happy accidents occur.”

The Most Important Part, Fun.
He broke the workshop into five “mini sessions” each with its own theme and the direction to simply have fun and use their imagination. The themes were Weird Animals, Magic, Weather, Favorite Noodles and, of course, Poop. The results were incredible and eventually became the design details and inspiration for “Find the Smile”, the first collection to be presented by Minor Details.
